What to Look for in a Pilates Instructor:
With the increased popularity of Pilates, demand for instructors is high. To fill the gap, new methods of teacher education are appearing, but they are not all credible. These are the guidelines to find the best instructors:
· A small class size. A mat class should have no more than 10 to 12 participants per instructor, since Pilates was designed to be a personalize experience. Classes that involve equipment should have no more than six students per instructor.
· Ask how long the instructor has been teaching Pilates – it should be at least several months
· Make sure the instructor trained with a comprehensive program of at least 400 hours of instruction.
· Ask if the training program required a written test, lecture, observation, practice and apprentice hours. “For a well-rounded education, the instructor should have all of these, especially hands-on experience in the studio.”
· Find out if the instructor teaches the full repertoire of specialized Pilates exercises, such as those with or without equipment, if so the instructor will be much more knowledgeable about Pilates’ philosophy and purpose .
